Geocache Description:

This cache is located adjacent to the parking lot of the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead (pronounced "Leed) South Dakota. In Lead, science and history meet - the past joins with the future. Lead home to the Homestake Mine, which ceased operation in 2001. The Homestake was at one time the second largest gold-producer in the United States and the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. Part of the mine now houses the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Science came to Lead and the Homestake in 1965 when Brookhaven National Laboratory Chemist Ray Davis built his solar neutrino experiment at the 4850-foot level of the Mine. Research has continued since. On August 26, 2015 a section of the original tank support used in Davis' Noble Prize winning experiment was erected next to the visitor center. The statue designed by South Dakota Artist Laureate Dale Lamphere honors Davis' achievements. While this "stargate" will not take you to other planets it does give a nice framed view of the Open Cut. After finding the cache be sure to check out the visitor center, which is chock full of interesting, state-of-the-art exhibits. While in Lead take a break, grab a bite and check out the town. There is more there than meets the eye. Be aware this is a high muggle area, so stealth is needed.
