It was previously called 'Town of the Future' and it definitely has lived up to it's name. According to Statistics New Zealand, since the 2001 Census, 3,822 people usually live in Rolleston. This is an increase of 1848 people, or 93.6 percent, since the 2001 Census. It is now the fastest growing town in New Zealand.
Since the Christchurch earthquakes, the population of Rolleston is expanding fast due to the land stability and it's closeness to Christchurch. Many subdivisions have been built with many more on the horizon.
