Geocache Description:

Windsor, Nova Scotia, is known as the Little Town of Big Firsts. This cache highlights an important part of the history of this town: King’s-Edgehill School — Canada’s First Independent School.

King’s-Edgehill School

Founded in 1788 by Charles Inglis, the first overseas Bishop of the Anglican Church, King’s Collegiate School was the first independent school in both Canada and the British Commonwealth outside the United Kingdom; the University of King’s College was also established at this time. Among the Fathers of Confederation are three former K.C.S students. In 1891 a girls’ school — Edgehill School — was established in Windsor; in 1976, both schools amalgamated to become King’s-Edgehill School, a university preparatory school for boarding and day students from grades 6 to 12. In 1923, several buildings on the school campus were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, as it was the original site of the oldest university in the colonies which became Canada.

King’s-Edgehill School has a well-deserved reputation as a leader in education and is very active in the community of Windsor.

This park-and-grab cache is winter-friendly. It is a small-sized container, so there is limited room for trading items. The cache is located directly on College Road. This is a busy road, so be careful when parking and getting out of your vehicle. A small ditch will be between you and the cache, and it will be filled with water at various times of the year – watch your step.

The school grounds are open to the public and its 65-acre campus is beautiful to see; however, drive carefully as there are families who live here year-round. Obey posted speed limits please.

A big thanks to the Headmaster of King’s-Edgehill School Mr. Joe Seagram for giving permission to place this cache beside the school’s property.
