C is for Caythorpe Caythorpe is a hamlet in Nottinghamshire, England. It is situated 10 miles (16 km) north-east from Nottingham, close to the River Trent. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 259. Its one claim to fame is the village pub in the centre of Caythorpe, dating from the early 18th century, hides a dark secret. It was reputedly regularly visited by notorious highwayman Dick Turpin, who was hanged in 1739. Riding his famous horse Black Bess, he used to leave the Fosse Way at East Bridgford, ford the river and use the Black Horse as a hiding place before going cross-country to join the Great North Road in the Dukeries. A large cupboard, known as Dick Turpin's hideout, still exists.
