L’importanza della piazza non deriva solamente dalla sua ubicazione nel tessuto urbano dell’Asti antica ed odierna, ma dal ruolo che ha svolto nei secoli: era la piazza del mercato, in una città la cui ricchezza era fondata sui mercanti e sui banchieri.
La piazza è circondata dal alcuni tra i più importanti palazzi di Asti, che si aprono alla piazza attraverso lunghi e caratteristici porticati che oggi ospitano numerose attività. I due edifici più importanti che danno sulla piazza sono certamente la Chiesa Collegiata di Sant’Anastasio ed il Palazzo Podestà, oggi sede del Comune.
The importance of the square comes not only from its location in the urban dell'Asti old and today, but the role it has played over the centuries: it was the market square, in a city whose wealth was founded on the merchants and bankers.
The square is surrounded by some of the most important buildings of Asti, which open to the square through long and characteristic arcades which house many activities. The two most important buildings overlooking the square is certainly the Collegiate Church of St Athanasius and the Palazzo Podesta, now the town.
La Chiesa Collegiata è dedicata al patrono di Asti, edificata tra il XIII e il XV secolo, su una chiesa più antica, come in molti casi ad Asti e di cui rimangono alcuni resti, su tutti il campanile romanico. L’interno gotico è a tre navate e presenta opere d’arte di grande pregio tra cui un polittico e una tavola di Gandolfino d’Asti, oppure il coro ligneo settecentesco e tracce di affreschi tra il 1300 ed il 1400.
Il Palazzo Comunale, invece, sorge su un precedente edificio medievale e divenne effettivamente sede del comune solamente dal 1558 grazie alla donazione alla comunità da parte di Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia. L’edificio prende le forme attuali grazie all’intervento di restauro effettuato dal 1727 dall’architetto astigiano Benedetto Alfieri. Oltre ai locali di rappresentanza e per il disbrigo degli atti amministrativi nello stesso palazzo furono realizzati spazi da affittare ai negozianti, mentre l'attigua area verso la canonica di S.Secondo era ancora riservata al mercato del bestiame.
The Collegiate Church is dedicated to the patron of Asti, built between the thirteenth and fifteenth century on an older church, as in many cases to Asti and of which there are some remains, of all the Romanesque bell tower. The Gothic interior has three naves and presents works of art of great value including an altarpiece and a table of Gandolfino d'Asti, or the eighteenth-century wooden choir and traces of frescoes between 1300 and 1400.
The Town Hall, on the other hand, stands on a previous medieval building and actually became the seat of the municipality only from 1558 thanks to a donation to the community by Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia. The building takes its present shape thanks to the restoration carried out since 1727 by the architect Benedetto Alfieri Asti. In addition to the local representative and for the handling of administrative acts in the same building they were built spaces for rent to retailers, while the adjacent area to the rectory of San Secondo was still reserved for the cattle market.
