Dead Hill was originally utilized for skiing but when a nearby hill became popular this place was left for dead...Later on, Dead Hill became a reservoir for Haverhill as they pumped water from Johnson's pond to a holding pond at the top and then fed it down into the Bradford area...abandoned pump houses and stations can be found hidden in the undergrowth as eventually mother nature reclaimed the hill...once again ...left for dead...Not too long thereafter, The Essex County Greenbelt Association acquired a section of the hill but unlike many of their other acquisitions, kiosks were never put in and trails were never established(still left for dead)...But, in recent times, a Boy Scout from Troop 87 named Steven Sample decided to retake the hill by establishing a trail system for his Eagle Scout Project...After jumping through all the necessary hoops, approval was granted by The city of Haverhill, The town of Groveland and the E.C.G.A. In doing so, he managed to bring some life back to Dead Hill...Ironically enough, the trailhead just happens to be across the street from his brother's Eagle Project(where lemons tend to habitate annually)...So, I decided to take a hike and give this locale a bit more life...Hope you enjoy yourself as much as I did......
