This cache was originally placed for the the First State Challenge 2015 sponsored by Delaware Geocachers! Although the challenge has ended, this cache is still available to be found!!
FSC-2015 Woodlawn
Cache Details:
From parking follow the trail slightly down hill along edge of field. Be sure to turn right at the first trail junction (marked waypoint. The trail eventually leads down to small stream valley and you end with a short easy bushwhack. Make a wrong turn and it could be much longer or a hard bushwhack. Expect about a 0.8 mile roundtrip hike.
Description:
William Bancroft had a genuine concern for the development of parks and the protection of the natural environment. He was the prime mover in establishing the Wilmington Parks Commission and under his leadership the city acquired Brandywine Park and Rockford Park. He created a foundation, now called the Woodlawn Trust, to continue this mission as well as others through various places in the Brandywine Valley.
To ensure its preservation as green space, Woodlawn transferred 1,100 acres of nearby land in the Brandywine Valley to become part of what is now the First State National Park. Woodlawn Trust still owns and maintains about 900 acres of land in Brandywine Hundred and nearby Pennsylvania. Though a portion of these lands are set aside for future development, a portion remains open to the public for hiking, walking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The cache location is along one of the trails in this remaining green space.
