Do you remember the heady days of the 1980's? The start of de-regulation and open market economics, interest rates over 20%, cellphones the size (and weight) of bricks, shoulder pads that came up to your ears and electro-beats in music became commonplace. There was a board game where the whole family could partake in the dizzying heights of making millions through open sharemarket trading called Poleconomy.
Poleconomy was invented by Bruce E. Hatherley, who was a New Zealander, and first published in 1980. The game was similar to Monopoly, players competed to acquire properties and investments. This involved the purchase of real-world companies and advertising using artificial money. The players took turns moving around the board via the roll of the dice, landing on the gameboard squares and carrying out instructions according to the square's contents or player decision.
Players took turns at being the Prime Minister through elections. Once in power they had the ability to dictate the levels of inflation and so increasing or decreasing rents for property owners. If a player couldn't cover their rent, their debt was written off and they could continue, receiving a government salary. Interestlingly enough, no-one became bankrupt in the game, according to the rules the game ends when the central bank runs out of money.
