Il nome del lago sembra derivi da "caffa", termine con cui gli antichi montanari indicavano un avvallamento o una conca, probabilmente a sua volta derivato dall'idioma longobardo "scaffa", con cui l'antico popolo indicava un avvallamento del terreno.
The name of the lake apparently comes from "caffa", a term used by old mountaineers in order to call dells or dips that probably derives from the Lombard word "scaffa" meaning "land dip".

Sotto l'aspetto geologico il piccolo lago Scaffaiolo si rivela molto interessante, perchè le sue origini risultano essere diverse da quelle degli altri laghi presenti nella zona: non si tratta infatti di un lago glaciale (ovvero generato dallo scioglimento di un antico ghiacciaio), ma deve le sue origini ad azioni di alterazione chimica e fisica, con conseguente disfacimento del macigno, ed all'azione erosiva di neve e vento, può essere dunque definito un bacino di origine carsica. Il bacino è ovviamente alimentato dalle acque piovane, dalla fusione delle nevi e da una falda acquifera (che si trova sotto l'adiacente Monte Cupolino).
The little Scaffaiolo Lake gets much more interesting from a geological point of view. This lake has really different origins from the other lakes of the same area: as a matter of fact, it is not a glacial lake (such as generated by the melting action of an ancient glacier), but it was created by chemical and fisical alterations resulting in a demolition of the rock integrity that allowed the wind and snow erosion to take place. This process makes the Scaffaiolo Lake a body of water with karst origins.The lake's water sources are rainwater (obviously), melted snow and an aquifer located in the nearby Monte Cupolino.

Karst lakes are usually small (and sometimes temporary), they are usually formed in a sinkhole (which is typical of the karst landscape), in a group of sinkholes or in isolated valleys.
