The Exe Valley Railway was opened in 1884 and ran for just over 19 miles between Stoke Canon and Morebath Junction. The GWR built it to connect the Bristol & Exeter Railway to the Devon and Somerset Railway (that once connected Taunton and Barnstaple)
There were four passenger services per day at the peak of the line's popularity but like many other rural rail lines traffic dwindled after nationalisation in 1948 and the line was closed in 1963.
