Geocache Description:

Welcome to The Cove Geocache. Get to find a great geocache and get some history about the old village of Alcona which was once a bustling lumber town on the shores of Lake Huron and the 1000 residents made it the largest community on the Huron Shore. But after a massive fire of the saw mill, the village  of Alcona had became a ghost town by 1903.

The large cache is located near two historical signs describing the village of Alcona (aka The Cove) circa 1845 to 1903.   The village of Alcona was named "the Cove" and was in existance from 1845 to 1903. In 1845, William Hill established a fishery in this location.  In the 1860's and 70's, a saw mill and a railroad depot.  By the 1880's there were 3 general stores, a hotel, a lumber and passenger dock. In 1893 the saw mill was destroyed and by 1903 it was a "ghost town". The geocache is by the railroad and a small stream and in a small stand of pine trees.
