This area was set aside as a reserve and the village was established during 1917. About 80% of the baches are lived in permanently.
It is a friendly place to live, close to the beach with a camping ground and children's play ground is there for all to enjoy.
Beach accessible by 4WD only of is a 10 min walk over sand dunes.
The beach continually changes and is not a safe swimming area. the tracks are sandy and muddy and you can get stuck. Access to the beach is via a sand track beside the playground..
There is good whitebaiting here as well as beach fishing
The Te Araroa trail Santoff Route begins 400m north of the village of Turakina by turning right and following the 8.5 km to the beach settlement of Koitiata. Follow it for 8.5 kms to the small beach settlement of Koitiata. At the playground, turn right/west and follow the track out to the beach, crossing the lagoon via the ford.
To access the cache you need to follow the track. The track can be muddy or sandy and unless you are sure dont drive and get stuck. You can walk down the track as its not far about 5 minutes.
The cache has room for small items .
