Yatton Keynell was known in 1086 as Getone and the name has evolved over the centuries that followed, notably taking Keynell from Henry Caynel a noted landowner in the 13th Century. The Getone/Yatton is an extraction from old English meaning “the head of the valley”.
Easton Piercy is the birth place of John Aubrey in the 17th Century, he went on to study at Trinity College at Oxford University and is recorded as being the first to map and document the Avebury Stones.
The Piercy Plod follows a favourite family walk of 5KM over multi terrain. Starting in Yatton Keynell on the village lane, the trail follows public footpaths across fields to the hamlet of Easton Piercy rejoining a lane, then the Grittleton Road, returning to Yatton Keynell.
The route is family friendly, but not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Our geology of clay means that in wet weather the fields become claggy – come prepared! There are also plenty of nettles, thorns, thistles and barbed wire to contend with in various places. But also lots of wildlife – we’ve seen badgers, deer and pheasants.
We suggest that the car is left in the Village Hall Car Park at N 51° 29.015 W 002° 11.575, there is plenty of safe parking, and a popular play park, adult fitness trail and tennis court at the same location.

Please take care crossing the road towards the highly recommended Bell Inn, continue down the Grittleton Road towards the first Cache. The Ebenezer Chapel is close by, built in 1835.

Be aware, there are often young muggles near GZ.
