[ITA] IL VECCHIO OLMO
L’olmo è una figura che tiene compagnia a Mergozzo ed ai suoi abitanti sicuramente ed in maniera documentata da ormai cinque secoli, come si può evincere dalla più antica raffigurazione del paese: la pala d’altare della Madonna del Rosario dipinta nel 1623 e conservata nella chiesa parrocchiale, dove la pianta è solo un giovane virgulto.
Come rappresentato nel dipinto, l’olmo si trovava al centro di Mergozzo ed esso era anche il centro della vita sociale e politica del paese. All’ombra delle sue fronde si riunivano infatti i capi famiglia per prendere importanti decisioni e amministrare la giustizia, ogni qual volta si sentisse il suono della campana maggiore. In cinquecento anni l’olmo è ormai diventato il simbolo incontrastato di Mergozzo e non ha perso tuttavia quella sua caratteristica di luogo di ritrovo, essendo ancora un importante riferimento per gli abitanti del paese.
Ancora ben radicato nella piazza principale in riva al lago di Mergozzo, ora il “Vecchio Olmo” è completamente cavo e sostenuto da “stampelle” di metallo, ma ancora verde e rigoglioso. Dal 2002 inoltre, a sottolineare la sua importanza, l’albero è stato inserito nella lista degli alberi monumentali del Piemonte nella quale è riconosciuto non solo per il suo interesse paesaggistico-ambientale, ma anche per quello storico-culturale.

[ENG] THE OLD ELM
This elm tree is an image that has definitely been keeping Mergozzo and its inhabitants company for five centuries. This fact is not only documented, but also supported by the oldest representation of the town in the altarpiece devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary painted in 1623 and preserved in the parish church. In the picture, though, the plant is depicted only as a young sapling.
As depicted in the painting, the elm tree was in the centre of Mergozzo and it was also a hub for the social and political life of the village. In fact, in the shadow of its fronds, family heads used to gather to make important decisions and to administer justice, whenever the toll of the main bell was heard. In five hundred years, the elm has now become the undisputed symbol of Mergozzo and it has not stopped being a meeting place, since it is still an important reference point for the inhabitants of the town.
Still well-rooted in the main square on the shores of Lake Mergozzo, the “Old Elm” is now completely hollow and supported by metal “crutches”, but it is still green and luxuriant. Moreover, since 2002 the plant has been included in the list of monumental trees of Piedmont in order to emphasise its importance. In this list, it is recognised not only for its landscape and environmental interest, but also for its historic-cultural one.
