[ITA] IL SASSO E SANTA ELISABETTA
Tra le viuzze interne del paese, ve n’è una che partendo quasi di fronte alla chiesa parrocchiale si trasforma poi in scalinata in pietra. Questa prende il nome di “Scarpia” e conduce alla parte alta e nucleo più vecchio di Mergozzo chiamato “il Sasso”. Caratteristiche di questo rione sono le differenze tra lo stile delle case ivi presenti: più signorili quelle che si affacciano sulla riva del lago, più semplici invece quelle addossate verso l’interno.
Alla sommità di questo sperone roccioso, inoltre, nella piazzetta che si raggiunge alla fine della scalinata, è anche presente una chiesetta dedicata alla Visitazione della Vergine a Santa Elisabetta, che tra gli abitanti è conosciuta semplicemente come Santa Elisabetta. Inizialmente sul posto era presente solamente una cappella offerta alla Beatissima Vergine, di cui oggi rimane solamente l’affresco nell’altare dell’abside. Successivamente, nel 1623 questa venne demolita per far posto alla costruzione del più grande oratorio.
La chiesa a pianta rettangolare possiede inoltre la più antica campana della Bassa Ossola datata 1669 e conservata nel piccolo campanile in granito. Sul lato ovest è anche presente la più antica fontana di Mergozzo realizzata nel 1854. Importanti anche i restauri di epoca più recente eseguiti sugli affreschi in facciata che li hanno così riportati al loro antico splendore.

[ENG] "IL SASSO" AND SAINT ELIZABETH
Among the internal alleys of the town, there is one that starts almost in front of the parish church and then turns into a stone staircase. This is called “Scarpia” and leads to the upper and older part of Mergozzo called “il Sasso”. The different styles of the houses located here is what distinguishes this rione. In fact, those overlooking the lake shore are statlier than those laying more towards the inside.
At the top of this rocky spur, there is also a small church dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin to Saint Elizabeth, located in the small square at the end of the staircase. For local people, the church is simply known as Saint Elizabeth, though. At first, there was only a chapel on site dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, of which only the fresco in the altar of the apse still remains. Later, in 1623, the chapel was demolished to make room for the construction of this larger oratory.
The church has a rectangular plan and it also features the oldest bell in lower Ossola dated 1669, kept inside the small granite bell tower. On its west side, there is also the first fountain of Mergozzo built in 1854. The more recent restorations carried out on the frescoes on the façade are also of particular importance for bringing the painting back to their original splendour.
