Here, on the side of a back road out of Carlingford, lies the last remaining stones of an old house which may have been 1 of the first in Ireland to feature a rooftop pool/hot tub. Although the popularity of rooftop pools only rose in the 1960's with the invention of the jacuzzi, pools and rooftop bathing in general dates back to the ancient Greek and Roman era, as far back as 4th century BC. The water was presumably heated by fire or furnace underneath as the location of the fireplace is still prominent, along with the pool above.
(Actually, thanks to a recent edition of 'Lesser Spotted Ulster', our good friend Joe informed us that this may actually have been an old limekiln. But I prefer the pool idea!) Louth County Council have done some fabulous work in the area around the deserted village in the past 6-12 months or so (2018-19). However, the rapid pace that weeds can grow means that gloves/long sleeves may be required here. Take care!
