The A38 Carkeel Roundabout (also known as A38 Cornwall Gateway) was named as part of the first round of Growth Deal funding announced in July 2014.<
Background
Carkeel junction is currently over capacity and severe congestion is experienced at peak rush hour periods during the working week. The congestion is even more pronounced during the summer months with the addition of heavy volumes of tourist traffic.
This traffic congestion is also expected to be further exacerbated by increased traffic volumes associated with future growth in Saltash and Plymouth to 2030.<
The scheme when completed will provide better access and improved journey times for commuters and visitors. It will support the economic regeneration of Saltash and the wider area through the management of congestion, which will in turn facilitate the delivery of the Local Plan allocations for future housing.
A38 Carkeel Signalised Roundabout
The existing Carkeel roundabout will be replaced with a larger signalised roundabout and the approaches and exits to the new roundabout will be enlarged to increase capacity to accommodate the future expected traffic flows.
Delivery Timescale
There are two phases to the delivery of the new Carkeel Roundabout:
Phase 1 is a Pinch Point funded scheme being delivered by the Highways Agency. This phase is being constructed and is due to be complete by the end of July 2015. This included the provision and installation of a pedestrian bridge over the east side carriageways and capacity improvements to the south side of the western carriageway. <
Phase 2 is being delivered by Cornwall Council and is the larger signalised roundabout as described above (A38 Cornwall Gateway). This phase is in the detailed design stage.
Construction of phase 2 is planned to start in Winter 2015 but will be confirmed later in the year.
A public consultation is taking place between the 21st July – 19th August 2015 for the scheme to take public comments on board.
As part of the public consultation, two exhibition days are being held:
