I have wanted to place a cache here for years. This site has a lot of Buckeye Lake history in its confines. It is the site of the earliest hotel on the lake. Thomas Minthorn was an early pioneer in the lake area when he built a log cabin at Lakeside, where the Ohio Canal entered the “reservoir” (now Buckeye Lake). It was the center point of much activity as it became a packet station where horses were relayed so that canal boats might proceed along the canal to Hebron and then to Newark. Food and lodging (the men sleeping in lean-tos) cost them $1.06 a week, while the men were working on the canal. Later, around 1840 , Minthorn built a tavern. The Tavern was also a hotel with 10 tiny rooms that were rented for the night. The downstairs was one big room, with a kitchen located in the back. A lot of Buckeye Lake history can be found in books (My Buckeye Lake Story ; Buckeye Lake Memories) written by Donna Braig, a lifelong resident of Buckeye Lake. In the mid 1970s, the VFW Post 1388 purchased the old Minthorn Tavern for a meeting place for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. They later razed the old Tavern and erected a fine spacious building that served as a great gathering spot for United States Veterans and their guests. The VFW has been closed due to lack of membership. The cannon has been taken away. The new owner of the property is bringing back the old "Minthorn" name. To the West of the parking area is a beautiful monument dedicated to all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The cache is a small container that must be unscrewed ( REMEMBER lefty-loosie.righty tighty). Please replace the cache as you found it. Bring your own writing utensil. You might bring a camera or Smart Phone to capture a picture of the beautiful memorial.
