Geocache Description:

This cache which is in a SSSI, is placed with the kind permission of Natural Resources Wales.

Another in the series around Angle Headland.

Thorn Island Fort built in 1854 is still in a good state of repair. The Fort was created as it guarded a place of naval importance. Lord Palmerston recommended that 70 forts should be strengthened or constructed to counter the potential threat of the French Navy. Eventually 12 forts were constructed around the entrance to Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven.

Divers recognise over 12 wrecks that are worth diving in the area of the island. One of the most famous is the sailing ship Loch Shiel which sank in 1878. Unopened bottles of beer from the ship are untainted by salt water - flat but drinkable - and were auctioned in 1999 for £1000 per bottle! Anybody thirsty?

The Fort was converted into a hotel in 1947 and was sold (and closed) in 1999.

So after many fun caches I have placed at this location I have had to change the cache to a boring bison tube as the other containers keep going missing. I have had to change its location but it is still close by so I don’t have to have to remove this cache from the series and it’s still got its title. Thanks.
