Tom Sawyer's pal, Huck Finn, was an orfin and homeless. He was mightily appalled at being sivilized, considering how dismal regular and decent the Widow Douglas would have him become. So he did better by living in the woods. He would go fishing in the Mississippi right alongside his woods-home.
Huck was close with Tom, so wanted to live almost spitting distance from his bestest friend. Huck also took a shine to Bekky, the prettiest gal he had ever had acquaintence with. Tom and Bekky would visit Huck by his hideout from time to time with parcels of food snuck out from their pantries.
You had to be fit and agile to get to Huck's hideout, from where he could spot any danger and stranger a coming.
