In the early 19th century, there was the new cemetery built on the Sustipan peninsula which closes the city harbor from the west. In the early Middle Ages there was the Benedictine monastery of St. Stephen, called "Sub pinis" (under the pine trees), erected on this remarkable site, i.e. on the remains from the Roman and Early Christian times. The monastery was first mentioned as St. Stephen's monastery in a document dating from 1068. According to the oral tradition, established on the historical documents, the last Croatian king Stephen lived in the monastery after he had been secluded there in the late 11thcentury. The modest fragments of the following edifices from the more recent periods have been preserved, i.e. a small church from 18th century, and a Neo-classic patio with a cupola ("gloriette" - designed by Vicko Andrić, a local architect), located in the middle of the ancient cemetery, which is a park today. After World War 2 the cemetery was resettled to the new location, to the east part of the city called Lovrinac.

The archeological excavations have discovered the Roman stone coffins - sarcophagi; the remains of the Early Christian three-naved basilica that was reconstructed in the early middle Ages; and the traces of the above mentioned monastery on this site.

To the west of Sustipan, if you go toward the cape of the mount Marjan, there are: The Museum of the Croatian Archeological Monuments, Meštrović's Gallery and The Castelet, once fortified residence of the family Capogrosso- Kavanjin, which has been reconstructed by the sculptor I. Meštrović. He has also carved a series of relieves in wood, depicting the scenes from the life of Christ, which can be seen in the small church on the premises.
