Bison? Buffalo? In Canada, both words are used to describe the same animal. Scientists usually refer to these animals as "bison" but both terms are correct. Millions of bison used to live in North America. They roamed the prairie regions and wooded areas feeding on grass and other plants. The bison is able to find food in the winter by swinging its giant head to move the snow. Its nose acts like a snow plow. The North American Bison is a large, dark coloured animal with a dark shaggy mane covering its head. The bull (male) has a larger, square-shaped head when compared to the cow (female). Both male and female bison have horns, as horns are not gender specific like antlers. The bison's head looks really big compared to its body, but the actual proportion is roughly the same as a horse or a dog. While they look like they would be slow moving, they can run at speeds up to 55 km per hour.
