The markhor is the official animal of Pakistan and its name means “snake horn” or "snake eater." Although it is an herbivore, it is possible someone saw it defend itself against a snake. This wild goat is an endangered animal that is dependent upon conservation programs for survival. This means that it is facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. They live in the mountainous regions of western and central Asia, and graze at altitudes of 500 to 3500 metres. The male (weighing around 80 to 110kg) is a solitary animal while the females (weighing around 32 to 50kg) gather in herds of about 9 animals. The markhor has long hair on its neck and the male has enormous spiralled horns that can easily grow to more than 1.5 metres in length. The females' horns are usually less than 50 cm in length.
