Popularly known as Kettle Drums, the Tympani are the only drums that contribute to the harmony of the orchestral sound. The Tympani (Timpani) can be tuned to different pitches, and are usually used in sets of 4 (called a console).
The head tension is adjusted to make the resultant note, from D to A below Bass clef. Each head has the range of a perfect fifth. Depending on the music, multiple instruments would be used, to lessen the pressure of tuning a single Tympani during performance. The shape of the drum shell produces a resonating sound. This often has to be muted to comply with the composer or conductor's wants.
Historically the Tympani was used in religious rituals by the ancient Hebrews, and pre-Ottoman civilisations. The largest recorded single cast Tympani, known as the Pejeng Moon, is dated at over 2000 years old and is found in Bali.
The early sixties saw Tympani sounds being incorporated into popular music by groups like The Drifters, Beach Boys, Beatles, Led Zepplin, Queen and Muse.
