A half sized flute, the word 'Piccolo” means SMALL in Italian, yet in Italy this instrument is called an “OTOVINA” which means little octave. The sound produced from this instrument is one whole octave higher than what is written. In other words, what is written and what the player plays is one octave lower than what is heard. This complexity is due to the short resonating chamber. Identical in design to the larger flute, the Piccolo originated from the Marching Band world, and was accepted into the orchestral setting cira 1735 through Operetic performances.
There is usually only one Piccolo per orchestra, and the music is often grouped with the violins or flutes, providing cheerful and upper tones. The Picolo is tuned to the key of C, although in the final closure of the song “Stars And Stripes Forever” by Sousa, the composer calls for the Piccolo to be tuned to D flat. The Russian composer, Tchaikovsky, was instrumental in bringing this instrument into the Orchestra.
