The largest of the orchestra instruments, as well as producing the lowest pitch of all the strings, the Double Bass is a standard component of any orchestra. A four stringed instrument, E and A an octave below middle C and D and G two below. This, plus the fact that much music is written an octave up for the Double Bass to prevent drawing extra lines on the stave, means that the player has to mentally transpose what sound is played.
Although a member of the String family, the shape of the sound box differs from the other strings, due to the method of playing. The Bassist would stand or sit atop a high stool, and lean the instrument toward the player. Thus the one side of the sound box is noticeably more tempered than it's cousins. The method of changing the string length for tuning is metallic, unlike other strings which use friction. The Double Bass has a fine ratchet cog for tuning. The size and length of the 4 strings used require that the strings are steel. Indeed the method of binding a steel string in a softer metal fibre wound around the string has evolved through the need to provide for affordable and (relatively) easily replaceable strings for the Double Bass.
Sound is made by (usually) plucking or scrapping the string with a bow, creating vibrations whose resonance is amplified within the sound box to produce the desired sound.

The Cache: Retrieval may be impaired by the mass of Muggles attending a performance across the road.
