The Flute is considered to be the oldest instrument of the Orchestra. Substantiated evidence of a 5 hole hollowed - out Vulture bone has been dated to 35 000 years old. Certainly much evidence of pipe – type apparatus is found in ancient Egyptian, Sumarian and Chinese sites. A major Deity of Hinduism, Krishna, is depicted playing a Flute.
The Flute player produces sound by blowing air through a hollowed out tube. By releasing the air via select holes along the tube, the resonant chamber catchment volume is altered, and thus the frequency and pressure of air is changed, and the resultant pitch creates a new sound. In 1800's Theobald Boehm increased the hole size, and devised a series of mechanical stoppers to block these larger holes. Thus was current Flute playing technique started.
The flute plays a range of (usually) 3 octaves starting from middle C. making it one of the highest sounding orchestral instruments.
