Rumoured to have been borne from the demands of a greater trumpet range, the warm wood texture of sounds from the Clarinet befit most pieces. The range of the Clarinet stretches from E below middle C and the upper register is usually more than two octaves above middle C.
Being a single reed instrument, a puff of air is forced through the gap between the reed and the wooden tube. This air travels down the tube until it finds an outlet, either through an open hole on the way, or via the bell at the end. As the air escaped, a vacuum is formed and replacement air is drawn in which travels up the shaft to the reed. This cycle is repeated twice in order to produce a note. In the case of A, this cycle is repeated 440 times per second.
