Originally a signalling device, the Trumpet has evolved into the orchestral setting without too much modification. Evidence of Trumpets being used have been found in Egyptian Burial Tombs, Asian artefacts from the Oxus civilisation, as well as from ancient Peru. It was during the Middle Ages that metalworking technology allowed the instrument to be made from more than a single sheet of metal, and that the 3 keys were incorporated to further influence the flow of air.
The Trumpet range is typically from F sharp below middle C going up three octaves. The three keys alter the pitch by one, half, and one-and-a-half, times the pitch, allowing for alternate fingerings. The Trumpet music is scored in the bass clef and has to be transposed by the player. This means that the key played on the Trumpet sounds like a different key played on another orchestral instrument.
Trumpet players are found in the middle or slightly to the right of the conductor in a Classic Orchestra.
