Named the French Horn by all but the French, this coil of 7 plus meters of brass tubing produces the third highest sound within the brass section. There are three valves which control the air passage, terminating in a flared cup called the Bell. The control of the pitch and timbre of the sound is maintained by the lip and mouth positioning of the player, as well as by the placement of the hand within the bell. The French Horn is usually tuned to F, and spans four octaves up.
The French of French Horn refers to the transition from a natural tube to a tube allowing for air passage to be manipulated, for it was the French who adapted the hunting horn to an orchestral instrument. In concert, there are normally two Horn players, and they usually are seated between Trumpets and Tuba. French Horn music is often transposed, depending on which valve is open.
