First introduced into the Orchestra in the early 1700's, this Oboe designed instrument is named after the English translation of the German name for Heavenly. The sounds of this instrument are more mellow and plaintive than that of the Oboe. Also a double reed instrument, the Cor Anglais differs from the Oboe only in that the air entering from the mouthpiece is forced to follow a curve before entering the sound chamber. This air inlet is known as the Bocal for both oboe and Cor Anglais, however the Cor Anglais affords the input air the ability to ratify and develop into a balanced flow of air before entering the sound chamber.
The instrument is tuned for B sharp, but the sound produced is an octave lower than what is written. So although it is tuned to B sharp, the sound that is heard is an E sharp.
Ironically, the Cor Anglais was only generally accepted in English and French orchestras in the mid 1800's.
