The most recognisable percussive instrument in an orchestra, the Snare Drum hails from the military. It was the means of communication with the troops long before the Bugle became accepted. It is a regular Tom Drum, with a set of (usually) metal strings tensioned against the base head. These provide the crisp vibrato sound characteristic of the Snare Drum. Vibration of the striking of the upper head causes the metal strand to reverb against the lower head, making a staccato type sound associated with fixed mobility (marching) and military precision. Although the sound can be adjusted by changing the tension of the upper head, the pressure of the Snare against the lower head, and the the force and nature of the drumstick contact with the head, they are not tuned at all, and simply provide an abrasive (although at times pleasant) sound.

Cache: Do not attempt after nightfall, and be weary of the occupants at the nearby defunct doss house.
