The Percussion family, or section, of an orchestra includes all percussive instruments, as well as all other unpitched items. These instruments can be split into three groupings – tuned percussion, ancillary percussion, and tympani.
Tuned Percussion involves most mallet activated instruments, pre-tuned instruments (Cow Bells, Triangle, etc) and melodic instruments.
There is a school of thought holding that the Keyboard range of instruments, such as Marimba, Glockenspiel and Xylophone; although requiring mallets, are grouped separately as keyboards. This is due to the skills required to play a keyboard instrument. This same school suggests that the Tympani, in a class of it's own, is evidence which supports their premise.

Due to the extent of the varied instruments, and to the often dominant sound of the percussionist, they are positioned around the back of the orchestra. In fact, when arranging for a performance, very often the provision of the percussion instruments is allocated to the stage provider rather than to the musician. This is known as the Back Line within the performing industry.
