Originally used for the military as a signalling device, the Bass Drum easily found it's way into recreational pastimes. A cylinder with diameter greater than height, and with both sides covered with a taunt material, the Bass Drum is able to vary the notes it produces by adjusting the tension of the covering material, or head.
Apart from the orchestra, there are two major forms of Bass Drum, either attached to a fixed drum kit and struck with a mechanical beater; or secured to a harness and used in marching bands. The mallets used to strike the head vary according to the requirements of the piece of music being played. Often both hands strike the head, to effect a roll sound. Bass Drums are mostly large, and are positioned at the very back of an orchestra, to the conductors left.
