[ITA] MONUMENTO AL DUOMO DI MILANO DI CANDOGLIA
La prima testimonianza della lunga storia di collaborazione tra Milano e Candoglia, che vede come protagonista il marmo rosa utilizzato per la costruzione del famoso Duomo, è il monumento che si incontra all’apertura del nucleo antico del paese.
Costruito ovviamente in marmo, nella parte più alta questo presenta lo stemma della Veneranda Fabbrica con l’effigie della Madonna che sotto il mantello svela il Duomo. Sotto di essa, una prima lapide scritta in latino ricorda l’inizio della costruzione del Duomo di Milano dedicato a Maria Nascente per volere di Gian Galeazzo Visconti nel 1386. A conclusione di questa parte verticale del monumento, un plastico delle montagne da cui ancora oggi viene estratta l’importante pietra utilizzata per le ristrutturazioni del Duomo stesso, indica i confini della zona del diritto riservato alla Fabbrica per l’escavazione.
Nella parte più bassa che si estende orizzontalmente, invece, sul lato destro si trova uno stemma raffigurante in centro Sant’Ambrogio, patrono di Milano, affiancato dai Santi Gervasio e Protasio, mentre su quello sinistro un altro stemma riporta i simboli identificativi della casata dei Visconti, committenti appunto del Duomo di Milano. Tra questi, al centro un’altra lapide ricorda le leggi che attribuirono la proprietà esclusiva delle cave di Candoglia alla Veneranda Fabbrica, ponendo fine alle periodiche controversie sul diritto di escavazione.
A sinistra del monumento di Candoglia, gli uffici amministrativi delle cave sono subito seguiti dall’edificio una volta sede della scuola di avviamento professionale per marmisti e ornatisiti della Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, mentre alle loro spalle si diramano le viuzze del tranquillo paese.

[ENG] MONUMENT TO MILAN CATHEDRAL OF CANDOGLIA
First evidence of the long history of collaboration between Milan and Candoglia, this monument is what visitors come across at the opening of the old village centre. This collaboration sees pink marble as the protagonist used for the construction of the renowned Milan Cathedral, the Duomo.
Built also in marble, this monument displays in its top section the coat of arms of the Veneranda Fabbrica (the enterprise appointed with the construction works) with the effigy of the Virgin Mary, who reveals the cathedral under her cape. In the section below, a first plaque written in Latin commemorates the start of the construction works of Milan Duomo in 1386. This was dedicated to Saint Mary Nascent at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. The lowest segment of this vertical section presents a scale model of the mountains from which the important stone used for the restorations of the Duomo is still extracted today. This also indicates the boundaries of the area of law reserved to the Fabbrica for excavation.
On the right side of the bottom horizontal section, there is a crest depicting the patron saint of Milan, Saint Ambrogio, in the middle with the Saints Gervasio and Protasio on his sides, whereas on the left side, another crest shows the distinctive symbols of the Visconti family, who commissioned the Duomo. Between these two crests, another plaque reminds of the laws that bestowed the exclusive property of Candoglia’s quarry to the Veneranda Fabbrica, putting an end to those periodic disputes over the right of excavation.
To the left of the monument of Candoglia, the administrative offices of the quarries are immediately followed by the building that once hosted the vocational school for the training of the marble workers and decorators of the Veneranda Fabbrica, while behind these, the narrow alleys of this quiet village branch out.
