Il Sassone
Il Sassone di Ispra è un masso erratico di serpentino che si trova sul lungo lago; avendo la stessa formazione litologica del Sasso “Cavalasch” di Ranco, probabilmente ha avuto origine da una stessa frana avvenuta forse nella zona delle valli del Gottardo o del Sempione ed è stato trasportato dal ghiacciaio che copriva tutta l’area del Lago Maggiore nell’ultima glaciazione Wurm (24.000 – 10.000 anni fa). Come tanti altri massi erratici disseminati nella zona, testimonia un grande fenomeno geologico iniziato 60.000 anni fa e conclusosi 20.000 anni or sono.
La serpentinite è una roccia ultrafemica metamorfizzata appartenente alla famiglia delle peridotiti, rocce nelle quali quasi tutti i minerali componenti (olivina, pirosseno e anfiboli) si sono trasformati in serpentino.
La struttura della serpentinite è fibrosa o lamellare; le serpentiniti osservate al microscopio sembrano costituite da un fine aggregato di fibre disposte a maglie o a grata; la scistosità è sempre presente e può essere più o meno accentuata
Il serpentino Prende il nome proprio dalla sua struttura scistosa che ha l'aspetto della pelle di un serpente, a causa delle sue inclusioni e variazioni di colore.

The Sassone of Ispra is a boulder roll of Serpentine, located along the lake; having the same lithological formation of the “Sasso Cavalasch" in Ranco, probably it has originated from the same landslide that occurred perhaps in the area of the valleys of the Gotthard and Simplon and it was transported by the glacier that covered the whole area of Lake Maggiore in the last Wurm Ice Age (24,000 to 10,000 years ago).
