[ITA] ORATORIO DELLA MADONNA DEL BOSCO
Percorrendo ‘Via del Bosco’ a Ornavasso, non si può non visitare la chiesa più antica del paese dedicata alla Beata Vergine Maria dell’Annunciazione. Il nome “bosco” con la quale è comunemente chiamata dai locali è da attribuirsi a come doveva presumibilmente essere la zona al tempo della costruzione dell’edificio sacro.
La data di inizio dei lavori viene fatta risalire al XII secolo, che sta dunque ad indicare l’esistenza dell’oratorio prima della colonizzazione walser. Tuttavia, le sue origini rimangono ancora oggi in gran parte sconosciute, lasciando quindi spazio al fiorire di voci e tradizioni orali. Risulta però che durante le invasioni svizzere che avvennero intorno al 1400, la chiesa venne utilizzata come nascondiglio per donne e bambini.
L’oratorio ha pianta quadrata e solo in seguito ad una ristrutturazione venne ampliato e vi si aggiunse il campaniletto a lato. Al suo interno le pareti sono interamente affrescate e fu proprio in virtù di queste pitture che nel 1908 il Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione dichiarò l’edificio “monumento pregevole di arte e storia”.
Di interesse è anche il breve spazio selciato e contornato da un muretto con sedili di pietra davanti alla chiesa, denominato “il renghi”. Qui si riunivano un tempo i capifamiglia del cantone per discutere gli interessi comuni.

[ENG] ORATORY OF OUR LADY OF THE WOODS
Walking along ‘Via del Bosco’ in Ornavasso, one could not but visit the oldest church in town dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Annunciation. The name bosco (“woods”), with which it is commonly referred to by the locals, is to be ascribed to how the area presumably looked like at the time of the construction of this sacred building.
The beginning of the construction works dates back to the 12th century, thus indicating the oratory already existed before the Walser colonisation. However, its origins still remain largely unknown up to these days, thus leaving room for hearsay and oral traditions to thrive. During the Swiss invasions that took place around 1400, though, it seems that the church was used as a hiding place for women and children.
The oratory has a square plan and it was only after a renovation that it was expanded and the small bell tower was added to the side. Inside, the walls are entirely frescoed and it was precisely because of these paintings that in 1908, the Ministry of Public Education declared the building a “valuable monument of art and history”.
In front of the church, the short paved area encircled by a stone wall with rock seats, called renghi by the locals, is of particular interest. It was here that the family heads of the rione used to gather to discuss their common interests in ancient times.
