Geocache Description:

This Cache has been placed for the 40th annual Pettingill Farm Day which provides family friendly activities and an opportunity to tour the 18th century farmhouse and view the scraffiti. Please park at gate but don't block it and walk in. You can drive in on Pettingill Farm Day.

Pettengill Farm is a singular example of an authentic and unspoiled New England saltwater farm of the late 18th century, pre-dating Maine’s statehood by several decades. Situated on the Harraseeket River estuary, Pettengill Farm comprises 140 acres of farmlands, apple orchards, gardens, forest, and, of course, salt marsh. Saltwater farming is an enterprise peculiar to Maine, and Pettengill Farm is thought to be the only farmstead of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard. Although the farm’s last resident, Mildred Pettengill, summered there until 1970, neither the buildings nor the grounds have ever been furnished with electrical power, running water, or central heat. The property and its “sense of place” represent a way of life that was once widespread across New England but which has now all but vanished. 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of Freeport Historical Society’s ownership and proud stewardship of Pettengill Farm.
