Geocache Description:

A winter-friendly micro in the Town of Watrous. This cache is part of the G.T.P.R. series gathered into this bookmark list

The Town of Watrous originally adopted its name from the name of the railroad station that was established as part of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad. Back when the Grand Trunk Railway Company was planning a western expansion of their establish rail system, an unknown person devised an alphabetical naming scheme to name all of the un-named stations and lines, starting in Manitoba, cycling five full rounds of the alphabet, and starting a sixth before finally ending at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Watrous is part of the second cycle, situated between Venn and Xena.

Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad went out of business in the early 1920's. The railroad was taken over by the Canadian government and was made part of the Canadian National Railroad which is very active to this day.

Watrous has the distinction of being the midway point across Saskatchewan along the main branch of the Canadian National Railroad. If you observe CNR signs, you will find that distance markers use Watrous as a zero mile marker.
