FIBONACCI SEQUENCE

Perhaps Leonardo Bonacci would be turning in his grave at the thought of his numbers being used for Geocaching...but then again, perhaps not! The Italian was reckoned to be one of the most talented mathematicians and free thinkers of his time.

Fibonacci numbers were first conceived more than 800 years ago but they form an integral part on the universe (see the Golden Mean, Golden Ration or Golden Number). The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where the next number is found by adding up the two numbers prior to it together, starting from 0 and 1: Here are the first 17 numbers of the Fibonacci sequence.

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987...

The numbers get huge pretty quickly and by the 53rd one we are already at  53316291173 and by the time we get to the 100th one the numbers are just too big to deal with at 354224848179261915075

....unless we are Geocachers, of course!
