The sandstone that can be seen at Princess Ledges is called Berea sandstone. The stone itself was formed hundreds of millions of years ago and is composed of fine grains of quartz bonded by silica. Due to its hardness and chemical resistance, Berea sandstone is often used as a building material, and has been quarried in northern Ohio for nearly two centuries.
The rock formations that are here resulted from erosion (wind, and water freezing and thawing) that wore away at the softer rock layers. As the soft layers eroded, large blocks of rock called slump blocks fell away, leaving the stronger and more resistant Berea sandstone layers to form ledges.
These ledges are impressive to see at any time of year, but in wintertime, springs flowing from the rock formations create stunning pillars of ice.
