Geocache Description:

The two pin oak trees were planted on January 1, 1954 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's stopover visit to Tirau, which saw approximately 7000 people gather at the nearby Tirau Reserve. The trees have been incorporated into the roundabout design.

We have placed the cache in the other tree as there is a bees nest now in the one where we originally placed. Do take care

This roundabout was desperately needed to improve safety and traffic flow. This section of highway is a key route for traffic travelling to and from Rotorua and the central North Island. Around 12,000 vehicles journey along this section of SH1 each day. The former intersection had a poor crash history. In the years before the upgrade, there were a number of fatal and injury-causing accidents, and it was high time that this road was given attention.

Description:

This is an extremely challenging cache to access, so if you don't think you can complete the task, then do not attempt it. Crossing the road may seem easy, but remember: traffic flows through here rapidly. At all times, you will be visible to passing traffic. Bear that in mind as you reach for the cache. This is not recommended for young children or pets to attend because of the nearness to the main road.

Parking is available on the unformed road on the west side of the roundabout.

The cache is a 200ml sistema in an obvious hole. Please take care not to damage any of the plantings as you approach and leave. It may pay for you to bring your own pen/cil. Have fun, and stay safe.
