Geocache Description:

Hello Fellow Cacher!

This is the geocache for one of Mr. Polley's three 4th grade Science classes. Each class is a team, and we are by far the best team.  All Hail Team MAGMA. We are in competition with the other classes, and earn points when the cache is found, and especially if you POST PICTURES. Thank you so much. Now learn something about our bubbling molten awesomeness.

Magma is a crazy hot semi-molten rock found beneath the surface of the Earth. It can collect in enormous magma chambers that feed volcanoes.  Magma is capable of intruding on neighboring rocks solidifying to form dikes and sills. It can also come to the surface of the earths crust, which is then called Lava. Magma is crazy hot.  Temperatures range from 1,300 degrees fahrenheit to 2,400. After Magma reaches the surface to become Lava, in cools, eventually solidifying to igneous rock. It's new Earth's crust. New crust is being created accross the globe all the time. For instance, the largest mountain range on the planet is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, found running North/South in middle of the Atlantic ocean. Two tectonic plates are being pulled apart, and magma comes up from the mantle to fill the gap. As the new crust solidified, the two tectonic plates move furthur apart.  The continent of Africa is moving away from South America at a rate of about an inch a year. This has been confirmed over-and-over by following the movement using GPS technology.
