Geocache Description:

Placed as part of a series by 3gs mens project aimed to raise awareness of historical facts within the borough of Merthyr Tydfil

Situated in an urban environment so beware of muggles!  Outside a very important building with a rich political history.  Now a modern venue and a hub of performing arts.

In 1897 the Public Office Committee requested that a crest with a suitable motto be laid in the mosaic work in the entrance hall of this building. This resulted in a Welsh Dragon being placed alongside the motto 'Y DDRAIG GOCH A DDYRY CYCHWYN' an approximate translation is , 'THE RED DRAGON INSPIRES ACTION' In 1901 the dragon became the official flag of Wales and in 1953 it was announced that a new Royal Badge containing the motto 'Y Ddraig goch a ddyry cychwyn'. The mosaic floor is damaged with a large crack slicing through the main image of the dragon. In 1987 this was used in the lyric of a song written by Godfrey Birtill comparing the crack in the dragon to symbolise the deterioration of Merthyr Tydfil town. Bring your own pen and tweezers would be handy too! Cache is wheelchair friendly although may need assistance. Parking is available at Castl Street or College Car Parks Merthyr Tydfil.
