Geocache Description:

Tweezers may be needed! This cache brings you near to the location of one of the tragedies of the Second World War in Watford. It is hidden close to the spot where, in the early hours of the morning of Sunday 30 July 1944, a V1 flying bomb landed. Fred Coates was fire-spotting from the top of Holy Rood Church, when he saw the flame from the 25-foot long missile as it came towards Watford from Harrow. He watched as the missile, which had a 16-foot wingspan, disappear into the night in the direction of Garston.

The resulting explosion caused the deaths of 37 people, including three children. 64 people were injured, 50 houses were damaged beyond repair, 500 other houses were damaged and 100 shops in St Albans Road lost their windows.

Walk north up Sandringham Road and take a look at the house numbering on both sides of that road to see that the houses which were destroyed were not all replaced - you'll see that the house numbers do not run sequentially. You also can see that the architecture of the houses changes, from the original Victorian terraces, to those rebuilt post-war.

If you would like to pay your respects, there is a memorial in North Watford Cemetery to the people who lost their lives in this incident.

Thanks to North Watford History Society for some of the historical information.

Plenty of free parking on the streets nearby, but often muggly, so watch out! No room for swaps or a pencil in the cache; you may need tweezers to get the log out.
