Geocache Description:

A small cache (4" diameter) at a great viewpoint.

Wintour's Leap is a noted rock climbing location and viewpoint located on the English side of the Wye Valley. It is is named after Royalist Sir John Wintour who, according to the (possibly exaggerated) local myth, was on his horse being hotly pursued by Parliamentary forces and escaped by leaping off the cliff at this point. They both landed safely in the Wye below and swam to safety of nearby Chepstow Castle. In fact, Wintour did escape from the Roundheads by using the river on two separate occasions, but from less spectacular positions at Lancaut and Sedbury.

The original cache at this location (GCT38K) was archived in December 2014 and as it's such a great viewpoint over the Wye, we felt a new cache should be located here. No rock-climbing or scrambling is required to find the cache.

Wintour’s Leap viewpoint is part of “Lancaut Nature Reserve". We thank Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, who own and manage the reserve, for giving permission for this cache.
