Johns' Place was a 160 acre farm originally bought from the Crown in 1804 . In 1870 the owner ( name unknown ) lost the farm in a card game . Circa 1957 the farm was severed and split for the construction of Highway 401 to the South . In 1972 the present 50 acre farm , and several others in the area , was bought by Doctor Purdy . Dr. Purdy was a Brother-in-Law to Galen Weston and related to the renowned Canadian poet Alfred Wellington Purdy , who was born in Wooler . The current owner , John Van Gilst , bought the farm in 1977 .
