Celebrating 10 Years as a registered geocacher Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mooiman: Before I leave for the Christmas vacation it is time to say goodbye to this listing. Thank you again to all who attended and the many good wishes. We are so grateful for having met so many good people through this activity and enjoy spending time with you all as often as we can. Ironically it has been bit of an anti climax now that I have completed the D/T matrix as well as my calendar days, so I am keen to pick up on some more challenges in the new year. I hope to share my 1000th find with macaddikt some time in the next few months. This will be my next milestone. Maybe we should aim for the 29th Feb Kevin?? This is my only remaining day outstanding. Happy caching everyone.

Geocache Description:

Calling all geocachers! This is just another excuse to celebrate life and this wonderful pastime of geocaching. 10 years ago my records show that there were a number of geocachers that registered for the 1st time. Where are they all? I have a list of 9 of them and I am 1 of those who registered in 2005. Please join me in celebrating this 10 year period. I would particularly love to meet those of you who have been registered geocachers for 10 or more years.
The venue is Emmarentia Dam.

Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens cover over 81 hectares, and with its contrasting areas of activity and serenity, draws an inordinate amount of visitors on a daily basis. Located at the northeast side of the park, the dam is a popular destination for energetic canoeists and small-boat enthusiasts. Sailing, canoeing and diving club facilities are housed on its eastern embankment.

Emmarentia and the gardens date back to 1886, when the farm Braamfontein was established by Frans and Louw Geldenhuys. After the South African War Louw contracted landless Boers to build the dam, which he named after his wife, Emmarentia.

In the northern section, take a pleasant stroll through the magnificent rose garden, indigenous herb patch, or view an amazing collection of succulents at the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens. The gardens have terraced ponds and fountains and a Shakespearean garden, with herbs and roses. There are 2 500 specimens of succulents and more than 20 000 indigenous trees in the park. The vast green surrounds are equally popular with dog walkers, cyclists and runners, while on weekends the sloped grass embankments are filled with picnickers.

Come and join us from midday onwards for a lovely day out in this wonderful park. Bring along your picnic basket and a picnic blanket or camping chairs. There are some large trees around with lots of shade and plenty of space for the kids to run around. Feel free to bring balls and bicycles too. Catch up with some old friends, make some new ones, and share geocaching stories, discover coins, and enjoy the day.

Unfortunately, dogs are only allowed in the southern section of the park, and not around the official gardens and fountains. Although we are planning on picnicking on the southern side of the park, if you plan on looking for the caches on the northern side, you will not be able to take your dogs with you through that section of the park.

This venue has also been chosen as there are numerous caches nearby that could be found at your leisure. If not already found I would encourage you to all solve the Thomas family puzzle caches viz. Curse of the FTF #14 - GC47DFE & Nasty Numbers and mean micros - GC5JH36.
