Geocache Description:

This is possibly the last of the Quest Series, as space in the South Yarra/Prahran region is getting sparse. I doubt we will ever make it to number 99, but hey,who knows?

Gladstone Gardens was developed by Prahran council around 1912 on part of a railway easement originally set aside for a railway line that ran from St Kilda to Brighton via Windsor Station. Those were the days of private construction of railways. In the 1850s, two rail routes from Melbourne to Brighton were proposed by rival railway companies: one to travel via St Kilda, and a loop line to Windsor, where it would join the opposition's line. The alternative line ran south from South Yarra to Brighton, via prahran The coordinates will find you in a small park called Gladstone Gardens. This was a location put aside for a private railroad. Nearby is a block of high-rise flats. Unlike the Housing Commission flats in other parts of Prahran, these did not replace slums. When the land was owned by the Railways Department private developers were not interested in this damp and swampy area; the land, once part of the Loop line to St Kilda station had remained barren. The flats therefore were placed in the centre of a quiet oasis of small streets and houses. Cache should be easy to find, it is a good size cache but as you are potentially on view to lots of muggles please take care, and handle the cache very carefully.
