Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of a series placed in celebration of Brunswick's Bicentennial (1815-2015).

We hope that you enjoy this series, and are able to visit some of the locations around town that make our community special.

The land where this apple farm sits was first settled by the Tillotson family from Massachusetts. They were drawn to the area in 1817 by the incredibly fertile soil.

Elmer and Clara Eyssen bought the land from the Tillotsons in 1927 and moved their family from Lakewood to Brunswick. At that time the land consisted of the current property plus many acres across Pearl Road as well as some property on Center Road. Back then, a large stand of maple trees on the side of the hill was used for maple syrup production and became Elmer and Clara's inspiration for giving their farm its well-known name.

The Eyssens were avid gardeners and soon grew more produce than their family could consume. They set up a table and umbrella alongside Pearl Road to sell their surplus harvest. Soon the stand became a popular stopping point for travelers on their way to Cleveland.

In Elmer's travels, he met an apple farmer and became very interested in the growing of the fruit. He began by planting several apple trees on his land. Once word got around and demand increased for his delicious apples, he quickly expanded his orchard. Elmer soon moved from the roadside stand into a store that sold peaches, pears, apples, and apple cider poured right from a wooden barrel during the fall harvest season.

Their youngest son, affectionately called Apple Bill, graduated from Ohio State with a major in pomology, the science and practice of growing fruit. Bill returned to his home, married his college sweetheart Jane, and together they grew their budding fruit stand into one of the premier roadside markets in Ohio..

In 1962, the Apple House was opened, with the massive stone fireplace that visitors still enjoy today.

Through the years, the farm has changed and evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing community.

In 2010, the property and business were purchased by Greg and Kelly Clement, a local family raising their 3 boys in Brunswick. They plan to continue the tradition by holding the farm in their family for generations to come.

Please DO NOT seek this geocache after dark! You are looking for a medium sized container covered with camouflage duct tape. Please be stealthy while you search, as this can be a very busy location at times. Don't even bother to try to find this geocache on autumn weekends. There are simply too many muggles! No need to root through any flowers. Bring a pen with you to sign the log.

Thank you to Robert Romph (Apple House Manager) for his permission to hide this geocache.
